View approved original text

This drug is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with insulin-independent diabetes, namely type 2 diabetes. It is especially used when sufficient control of blood sugar is difficult with monotherapy using metformin or pioglitazone while following dietary and exercise therapies. It can also replace the combination therapy of pioglitazone and metformin. Management of type 2 diabetes is very important with nutritional counseling, weight loss, and regular exercise, as these lifestyle therapies greatly help maintain the efficacy of drug treatment. This drug is used to improve blood sugar control in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Precautions

This drug consists of two components that help lower blood sugar. The first component may cause a rare side effect called lactic acidosis, in which excess lactic acid builds up in the body; this condition can be very serious and life-threatening if untreated. Therefore, patients with reduced kidney function or problems with the heart or lungs, and those with sepsis or dehydration should not use this drug or should do so with extreme caution. Additionally, patients with impaired liver function should not take this drug. Excessive alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects, so alcohol should be avoided during treatment. The second component can worsen heart failure, so patients with poor heart function should not use this drug. If symptoms of heart failure occur, consult a doctor immediately, and the dosage may need to be adjusted or stopped if necessary. This component may also cause fluid retention, leading to swelling or weight gain, so caution is advised. Patients with a history of bladder cancer or those currently with active bladder cancer should not be administered this drug. If any abnormal symptoms such as hematuria or urinary disorders occur during treatment, notify a doctor immediately. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this drug, and safety in pediatric patients has not been established. Elderly patients may have reduced kidney function, so the dosage of this drug should be determined carefully, and kidney function should be monitored regularly. During treatment with this drug, regular monitoring of blood glucose, blood tests, liver function tests, and kidney function tests should be performed, and it is recommended to also check vitamin B12 levels. If symptoms of hypoglycemia or early symptoms of lactic acidosis (such as difficulty breathing, muscle pain, fatigue, altered consciousness, etc.) occur, stop taking this drug immediately and inform healthcare personnel. Additionally, this drug may interact with other medications, so inform healthcare personnel of any other medications being taken, and treatment with this drug may need to be temporarily discontinued before and after surgery. Lastly, it is important to combine dietary and exercise therapies for normal blood sugar control, and safe intake should be ensured through regular check-ups and consultations with healthcare personnel.
