This medication is used for long-term treatment of erosive reflux esophagitis associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease and prevention of relapse in patients with esophagitis. It also helps alleviate symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease without esophagitis. It is used in combination with antibiotics for the treatment of duodenal ulcers and peptic ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection and is effective in preventing relapse of these ulcers. It also helps in the treatment of upper gastrointestinal symptoms related to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and in the treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers caused by them. It is also utilized in the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and is used in prevention and maintenance therapy of rebleeding due to gastric ulcers or duodenal ulcers. Therefore, it is an effective medication for the treatment of a wide range of gastrointestinal diseases and symptom improvement.

Hives, angioedema, anaphylaxis reaction/shock, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis (Lyell's syndrome), acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis, drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS syndrome), microscopic colitis, jaundice, hepatitis, liver failure, encephalopathy, fractures, interstitial nephritis, exacerbation of asthma, shortness of breath, rhabdomyolysis, systemic lupus erythematosus, cutaneous lupus erythematosus

Mild side effects

  • Hematologic and lymphatic system adverse reactions: leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, agranulocytosis, pancytopenia
  • Immune system adverse reactions: fever, angioedema
  • Metabolism/nutritional adverse reactions: peripheral edema, hyponatremia, hypomagnesemia
  • Nervous system adverse reactions: insomnia, anxiety, confusion, depression, aggressiveness, hallucinations
