Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood pressure control for essential hypertension through the combination of amlodipine and valsartan

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

In cases where blood pressure is not adequately controlled due to essential hypertension, valsartan or amlodipine monotherapy can effectively lower blood pressure. These two medications help stabilize blood pressure either by dilating blood vessels or through blood pressure regulation. Adequate management of blood pressure plays a crucial role in reducing cardiovascular risks associated with hypertension and maintaining health. Therefore, patients with essential hypertension may benefit from blood pressure management through amlodipine or valsartan monotherapy.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn when taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Persons allergic to this medication's components or similar drug classes, pregnant or nursing women, and patients with severe kidney or liver dysfunction should not use this medication. Patients deficient in sodium or fluids should correct their condition before taking this medication, and should carefully monitor blood pressure changes during use. Patients with high potassium levels or those taking other medications that may elevate potassium levels should frequently check their potassium levels and take precautions. Patients with renal vascular problems or those who have recently undergone kidney transplants should use this medication cautiously due to the risk of worsening kidney function. If severe swelling of the face or neck occurs (angioedema), the medication should be discontinued immediately and not be taken again. Patients with heart failure or those recovering from myocardial infarction should carefully monitor any changes in kidney function while taking this medication, and dosage adjustments may be necessary. Though this medication is used for high blood pressure treatment, its efficacy may be limited in patients with acute myocardial infarction or unstable angina. Caution is advised while driving or operating machinery due to potential dizziness or fatigue. Overdose of this medication may result in severe hypotension or arrhythmias, and immediate medical attention is required in such cases. Additionally, there may be interactions with other medications, so patients taking especially antihypertensives, potassium supplements, diuretics, or anti-inflammatory medications should consult with their physician or pharmacist. This medication is not recommended for children under 18 years of age, as its safety and efficacy have not been sufficiently established. For elderly patients, it is administered in similar doses as adults, but caution may be necessary depending on the condition. Finally, regular monitoring of blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels during use is crucial for early detection and management of any abnormal signs.
