This medication is used to treat diseases caused by excessive gastric acid such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It also helps to prevent Mendelson’s syndrome during anesthesia before surgery and plays a role in preventing ulcers that may occur after surgery. It is effective in treating gastric and duodenal ulcers due to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug use. It also aids in the improvement of lesions such as erosions or bleeding in acute and chronic gastritis. Additionally, it alleviates symptoms like heartburn and regurgitation, thus reducing discomfort for patients. Overall, it is used for the treatment and symptom relief of various gastrointestinal diseases related to excessive gastric acid.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, individuals who have had allergic reactions to this medication or its ingredients should not take it. Patients with a history of acute porphyria, a rare disease, should not be administered this medication as it may trigger seizures. This medication contains lactose, so patients with genetic lactose intolerance or related diseases should not take it. In patients with impaired kidney function, this medication is excreted through the kidneys, which may cause an increase in blood concentration, thus requiring dose adjustment. Patients with impaired liver function should also use this medication carefully, and those with a history of drug allergies or elderly patients should be cautious as well. Patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, especially elderly patients or those with a history of gastric ulcers, need regular monitoring. This medication can mask symptoms of gastric cancer; therefore, gastric ulcer patients or newly developed or changed dyspeptic symptoms in middle-aged and older patients should verify the presence of malignant disease before administration. Gastric and duodenal ulcer patients that test positive for Helicobacter pylori require eradication therapy. This medication may rarely cause severe allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock; if unusual symptoms occur, administration should be stopped immediately, and appropriate treatment should be sought. If symptoms such as hives, rash, difficulty breathing, or hypotension occur, discontinuation is necessary. There may be abnormalities detected in blood tests; therefore, if symptoms such as general malaise, bleeding, or fever arise, the physician should be informed immediately. If liver function abnormalities occur, administration should be suspended if the liver function test results are abnormal. There may be rare occurrences of arrhythmias or vasculitis, so caution is advised if such symptoms appear. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include constipation, nausea, abdominal pain; however, diarrhea or acute pancreatitis may occur infrequently. Neurological side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, headache, or confusion may occur, thus medical consultation is necessary if unusual symptoms arise. Gynecomastia or changes in sexual function have been reported rarely, but causation is unclear. Myalgia or arthralgia may occur, and rarely muscle damage can develop, so caution is advised. Skin rashes or hair loss may occur infrequently. During the course of this treatment, blood, liver, and kidney function tests should be periodically performed to monitor therapeutic effects. Elderly or chronic disease patients have an increased risk of pneumonia, hence caution is needed. If dizziness or drowsiness occurs while taking this medication, driving or operating dangerous machinery should be avoided. There may be potential interactions with other medications; therefore, it is necessary to consult with a doctor or pharmacist if taking other medications. Pregnant women, women who could become pregnant, and breastfeeding women should carefully consider the risks and benefits before taking this medication. Safety in children has not been sufficiently established, hence caution is needed for use. No specific severe problems have been reported in cases of overdose; however, vomiting or gastric lavage or other appropriate treatment may be required. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers.
