Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood sugar control for patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used for adults with type 2 diabetes to improve blood sugar control in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy. It can be administered to those who have never taken diabetes medications before or whose blood sugar control is insufficient with monotherapy. Additionally, it is added in cases where blood sugar control is difficult with metformin monotherapy or combination therapy with other diabetes drugs (such as sulfonylureas, empagliflozin, insulin, etc.). This medication is useful in enhancing blood sugar control effects when used alongside multiple therapies. It effectively improves blood sugar levels with a suitable blood sugar control method tailored to the patient's condition.

Precautions

This medication can cause a rare but serious side effect called lactic acidosis; therefore, patients with impaired kidney function or issues with heart or liver functions should not use it. Additionally, it should be avoided in patients with allergies to any ingredients of this medication or those with specific conditions such as type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or acute myocardial infarction. As there is a risk of hypoglycemia, caution is needed when used with other antidiabetic agents such as insulin or sulfonylureas, and dosage adjustments may be necessary. Patients with decreased kidney function should have their kidney function tested periodically, and the medication should be temporarily discontinued under circumstances that pose a risk of acute kidney injury. This medication can cause skin conditions such as acute pancreatitis or bullous pemphigoid; therefore, if severe abdominal pain or skin abnormalities occur during treatment, consult a doctor immediately. It may lower vitamin B12 levels, so it's important to check for vitamin B12 deficiency during long-term use. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid using this medication, and it is not recommended for children and adolescents. Elderly patients often experience reduced kidney function, so adequate dosage adjustments and regular monitoring of kidney function are needed. This medication can interact with various drugs; therefore, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medications. In case of overdose, there is a risk of lactic acidosis, and you should seek medical treatment immediately, possibly necessitating hemodialysis. Store this medication out of the reach of children, in a place avoiding moisture, and in its original container.
