Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to help control blood sugar in patients with insulin-independent diabetes, i.e., type 2 diabetes. It is particularly administered when sufficient blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy using metformin or pioglitazone or as an alternative to combined therapy with pioglitazone and metformin. For managing type 2 diabetes, it is very important to also adhere to dietary and exercise regimens, as these lifestyle improvements greatly enhance the effectiveness of medication therapy. Therefore, this medication is intended to improve blood sugar control and contribute to diabetes management when used alongside appropriate lifestyle habits.
This medication is generally administered in divided doses with meals to minimize gastrointestinal adverse reactions associated with metformin. Initially, it should be started at 1 tablet per day, and the dosage should be gradually adjusted based on the assessment of therapeutic response. The dosing should be individualized not to exceed the maximum doses of pioglitazone 30 mg and metformin 2500 mg. For patients with renal impairment, the elderly, frail patients, and others, dose adjustments should be based on a careful assessment of kidney function.
This medication helps to control blood sugar. However, caution should be exercised when taking this medication due to the risk of a rare side effect known as lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is a dangerous condition that occurs when excessive lactic acid builds up in the body, which can be life-threatening in severe cases. Patients with impaired kidney function, heart disease, or liver dysfunction may have a higher risk of lactic acidosis, so it is essential to consult a doctor before using this medication. Additionally, this medication may worsen heart failure, so it is advisable for patients with severe heart disease not to use it. Excessive alcohol consumption may interact with this medication and increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it is best to avoid drinking alcohol. Regular monitoring of kidney and liver functions is advisable during the period of taking this medication, and if any unusual symptoms (e.g., fatigue, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, etc.) appear, immediate medical consultation is necessary. Furthermore, this medication may cause hypoglycemia, so caution is required when skipping meals or engaging in sudden vigorous exercise. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe heart failure, and those with significantly impaired liver or kidney function should not take this medication. Regular blood glucose monitoring and checking vitamin B12 levels during treatment with this medication is recommended. Finally, this medication should be used with caution in patients with a history of bladder cancer, and if symptoms such as urinary disturbances or hematuria occur, the physician should be notified immediately.
Lactic acidosis (fatigue, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, weakness, abdominal pain, low body temperature, low blood pressure, bradyarrhythmia), severe allergic reactions (hives, severe swelling, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, pallor), severe skin reactions (severe rash with fever, blisters, skin peeling, oral/ocular mucosa pain), breathing difficulties (shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, coughing with accompanying fever)
Upper respiratory tract infection, diarrhea, nausea, headache, urinary tract infection, sinusitis, dizziness, peripheral edema, weight gain, anemia, muscle pain, dental disorders, worsening diabetes, pharyngitis, dyspepsia, insomnia, dry mouth, constipation, abdominal bloating, gastroesophageal reflux disease, intraluminal gas in the gastrointestinal tract, increased serum creatinine, increased serum urea, blood glucose abnormalities, changes in serum creatinine levels, hypoglycemia, reduced vitamin B12 levels, increased likelihood of ovulation, osteoporosis
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
