This medication helps control abnormal lipid levels in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It lowers total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglyceride levels while increasing the levels of HDL cholesterol, often referred to as good cholesterol. When used in conjunction with dietary therapy, it is effective in managing blood lipids and contributes to reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. This medication is used for improving the health of individuals with dyslipidemia.

How to take

Adult dose

For adults, take 1-2 mg of Pitavastatin Calcium once daily. If the lowering effect on LDL cholesterol is insufficient, the dosage may be increased to a maximum of 4 mg per day. The dosage should be appropriately adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or more.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients who are allergic to this medication or have active liver disease, severe liver impairment, or are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication. Additionally, it is not used in children as its safety has not been established. Patients with renal dysfunction or a history of liver impairment should use this medication with caution, and there is an increased risk of muscle damage when taken with certain other medications, necessitating careful monitoring. In particular, concomitant use with fibrates or niacin may lead to muscle issues and renal deterioration, making it advisable to avoid such combinations. During treatment with this medication, unusual symptoms such as muscle pain, muscle weakness, dizziness, dyspepsia, and skin rash may occur. If muscle-related symptoms or liver dysfunction symptoms arise, immediate consultation with a physician is required, and the medication should be discontinued if necessary. Regular liver function tests should be conducted, and treatment should be halted if enzyme levels rise, with appropriate measures taken. Additionally, this medication may cause thrombocytopenia or other blood abnormalities, hence periodic testing is needed. This medication is used for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, and it is recommended to attempt non-pharmacological treatments such as diet and exercise before starting medication. It's also important to regularly check blood lipid levels during treatment to assess therapeutic effectiveness; if it is ineffective, the medication should be discontinued. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should not take this medication due to potential harm to the fetus, and breastfeeding women should also avoid its use. There is insufficient data on the safety of this medication for children, so it is not used in pediatric patients. Store the medication out of reach of children, in its original container to prevent degradation of quality. Elderly patients may experience adverse effects more readily due to decreased physical function, so caution is needed and dosage adjustments may be necessary if unusual symptoms manifest. Lastly, this medication may interact with certain drugs, so it is essential to consult with a physician or pharmacist if other medications are being taken.
