This drug is effective against various bacteria including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. It is particularly used for the treatment of eye diseases such as blepharitis, dacryocystitis, stye, conjunctivitis, keratitis, and corneal ulcer. This drug effectively suppresses infections caused by these bacteria, improving inflammation and alleviating symptoms. Therefore, it is recommended for patients experiencing discomfort due to infections around the eyes.

How to apply drops

Adult eye dose

For mild to moderate infections, instill 1-2 drops in the infected area every 4 hours. For severe infections, instill 2 drops every hour until symptoms improve, then gradually taper off. Adjust as appropriate for age and symptoms.

Precautions

This drug is an aminoglycoside antibiotic; it should not be used in patients who have had allergic reactions to this drug or similar drugs. While using this drug in the eyes, side effects such as eyelid itching, swelling, redness, conjunctivitis, and temporary warmth in the eyes may occur, so usage should be stopped immediately if these symptoms arise. Caution is needed as some patients may occasionally experience eye irritation or pain. To prevent the development of resistant bacteria, it is advisable to conduct a susceptibility test on the infecting bacteria before using this drug and to use it for the minimum necessary duration only. Before use, it is recommended to conduct a thorough medical history and skin response tests to reduce the risk of allergic reactions or shocks. Repeated long-term use may lead to an excessive proliferation of resistant strains, in which case drug use should be stopped, and appropriate treatment should be sought. This drug contains components that should not be used together with certain antibiotics, so consultation with a professional is necessary before combining it with other medications. When using aminoglycoside class medications systemically, careful monitoring of blood levels is essential. During treatment, it is advisable to avoid wearing contact lenses to prevent the spread of infection. Temporary blurred vision may occur upon instillation, so driving or operating machinery should be avoided until vision returns to normal. When using this antibiotic combined with anticoagulants, there may be an increased risk of bleeding; therefore, regular checks of blood coagulation status and adjustments of anticoagulant doses if necessary are required. Although no risk of teratogenic effects was reported in animal studies during pregnancy, it should only be used when absolutely necessary, and during breastfeeding, it should be avoided unless the benefits outweigh the risks to the baby. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as eye inflammation, redness, increased tearing, swelling, and itching may occur, and blood drug levels can be managed with adjustments and, if necessary, hemodialysis. This drug should not be injected directly into the eyes and should only be used in the form of eye drops. Some strains in Korea have shown resistance to this drug, making bacterial susceptibility testing very important before treatment.
