Treatment for hypercholesterolemia and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used as an adjunct when diet and exercise are insufficient to control primary hypercholesterolemia and mixed hyperlipidemia. It is also beneficial in conjunction with diet or other treatments for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. It lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in patients with hypercholesterolemia, thereby delaying the progression of atherosclerosis. It can be used as an adjunct to diet in pediatric patients aged 10 to 17 years with certain familial hypercholesterolemia and is effective in patients with dysbetalipoproteinemia. Furthermore, it helps reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and related revascularization procedures in middle-aged individuals at high risk for cardiovascular diseases. In summary, this medication is used for various hypercholesterolemia and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk.
Irrespective of meals, administer 5 milligrams as the initial dosage once daily at any time during the day. The maintenance dose is 10 milligrams once daily, and adjustments should be made based on LDL cholesterol levels, treatment goals, and patient response at intervals of 4 weeks or more. The dose may be increased up to a maximum of 20 milligrams per day.
In pediatric patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (ages 10-17), the dosage can be administered once daily at 5 milligrams to 20 milligrams. The dosage is recommended to be adjusted at intervals of 4 weeks or more according to the therapeutic objectives.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients who are allergic to any of the components of this medication, those with severely impaired liver function, patients with muscle disorders, patients with severely impaired kidney function, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and patients taking certain medications should not take this medication. It is important to periodically check liver function and muscle condition when taking this medication. Patients who consume large amounts of alcohol or have a history of liver disease should be particularly cautious, and any other conditions like hypothyroidism or nephrotic syndrome should be treated beforehand. If muscle pain, weakness, fatigue, or fever occurs, patients should immediately inform their doctor, and if muscle enzyme levels rise significantly, the medication should be discontinued. Additionally, patients at high risk for severe muscle weakness or rhabdomyolysis should use this medication with caution. This medication may interact with other drugs, so if other medications are being taken, one should consult their doctor or pharmacist. Particularly, when taken with certain antivirals, immunosuppressants, antifungals, antibiotics, and fibrate drugs, the risk of muscle damage may increase. Women who might become pregnant should ensure proper contraception, and this medication should not be taken during pregnancy. It is not recommended during breastfeeding either. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so one should visit a medical institution immediately for appropriate treatment. This medication may cause symptoms like dizziness, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. Lastly, if any abnormal symptoms such as liver function anomalies, skin rashes, or severe muscle pain occur while taking this medication, they should inform medical personnel right away, and it is important to continue treatment safely through regular check-ups.
