This medication is used as an adjunct to dietary therapy for lowering high total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Apo B protein, and triglycerides in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, especially heterozygous familial and non-familial, and mixed hyperlipidemia, as well as for increasing HDL cholesterol, the 'good' cholesterol. It can also be given alone to patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia when other lipid-lowering therapies are not effective or cannot be used. This medication is used together with an appropriate diet that includes restrictions on saturated fats and cholesterol, and is prescribed when diet alone or non-drug measures are insufficient. Prior to treatment, secondary causes of hypercholesterolemia, such as diabetes or hypothyroidism, should be evaluated and treated as necessary. Regular monitoring of total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, and triglyceride levels is important to assess treatment progress. This medication helps reduce the risk of atherosclerotic vascular disease due to hypercholesterolemia.
