Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with specific diseases. For example, it should not be administered to patients with inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, patients with bowel obstruction syndrome, or patients with unexplained abdominal pain. Additionally, patients allergic to this medication or its components, and Rhein-based medications should not receive this medication. Patients with liver disease or those with a history of liver disease should not take this medication. It is not to be used in children under 15 years of age, and it contains lactose, which means it should not be given to patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic issues. Patients with a history of small intestine or colon diseases should be given this medication cautiously, and pregnant or breastfeeding women and elderly individuals over 65 years should also be monitored carefully. In the case of the elderly, the dosage should be reduced. Taking this medication can cause gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea, loose stools, and abdominal pain. Long-term use carries a risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers, or perforation. Therefore, caution is needed. If diarrhea worsens, it can lead to dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, so use should be stopped immediately, and medical advice should be sought. Symptoms such as itching, rash, and eczema on the skin can commonly appear, and liver dysfunction can occur rarely, so it is important to periodically check liver function. Long-term use must be under a doctor’s guidance, and if diarrhea occurs, use should be stopped. It is advisable not to combine with laxatives. Due to the risk of hepatotoxicity, signs of liver damage should be carefully monitored, especially when taking other medications that can put a strain on the liver. It is also advisable to avoid alcohol consumption. Antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum, as well as salts, can interfere with the absorption of this medication, so at least a 2-hour interval should be maintained when taking this medication. Taking diuretics together can enhance the diuretic effect, leading to dehydration and hypokalemia, so caution is necessary. When used in conjunction with cardiac glycosides, the risk of arrhythmias may increase, so careful usage is essential. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid taking this medication. Animal studies have reported delays in fetal bone formation, and some components can be passed through to breast milk. Overdosage may result in severe diarrhea, in which case electrolyte supplementation and necessary treatments should be administered.
