Precautions

This medication may cause a rare but serious side effect known as lactic acidosis; therefore, it should not be used in patients with impaired kidney function or severe cardiac disease. Patients who are allergic to any ingredients in this medication or those with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or diabetic coma should not take it. Patients with decreased kidney function, acute infections, dehydration, severe trauma, heart failure, liver dysfunction, or alcohol abuse should be very cautious when taking this medication. Pregnant or nursing women are advised to avoid this medication, and those who plan to become pregnant should consult a doctor. Symptoms of hypoglycemia may occur during treatment with this medication; therefore, it is essential to closely monitor blood sugar changes, especially when taken with insulin or sulfonylurea medications. Additionally, since this medication is primarily excreted through the kidneys, regular kidney function tests should be performed, and if kidney function worsens, the doctor should be notified immediately. When undergoing a radiologic examination that utilizes iodinated contrast agents, this medication should be discontinued for a period before and after the examination, and it should also be stopped for a period prior to any surgical procedures. Acute pancreatitis or skin blistering disorders may occur, so if severe abdominal pain or unusual skin symptoms arise, immediate consultation with healthcare personnel is necessary. Due to the metformin component, there may be a risk of vitamin B12 deficiency; therefore, checking blood vitamin B12 levels is necessary during long-term use. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform the doctor or pharmacist about any other medications being taken. Safety and efficacy in children and adolescents have not been established, so it is not recommended for this age group. Elderly patients are at higher risk of kidney function decline, so kidney function should be frequently monitored, and appropriate dose adjustments are necessary while taking this medication. Patients should be cautious when driving or operating machinery while taking this medication, and in case of an overdose, they should seek appropriate medical treatment immediately.
