Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used for the treatment of essential hypertension. It also helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It is particularly effective in high-risk patients aged 55 and older who cannot use ACE inhibitors, such as those with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, transient ischemic attack, or signs of end-organ damage, in reducing the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, this medicine plays an important role in managing hypertension and preventing cardiovascular diseases.
1. Essential Hypertension Telmisartan should be administered orally as a single dose of 40 mg once daily with water, and may be taken regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may be effective, and if necessary, the dosage can be increased up to 80 mg once daily. Maximum blood pressure-lowering effects are observed 4 to 8 weeks after dosage increase. 2. Reduction of Cardiovascular Disease Risk With this medication, the recommended oral dose is 80 mg once daily with water, and it may be taken regardless of meals. The effectiveness of reducing morbidity and mortality rates for cardiovascular disease at doses lower than 80 mg is not known. When initiating treatment with this medication for the purpose of reducing cardiovascular risk, it is recommended to monitor blood pressure, and appropriate adjustments of antihypertensive medication may be required.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn, especially during pregnancy; therefore, if pregnancy is confirmed, it should be discontinued immediately. Do not take this medication if you have an allergy to it or its components, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have severe liver impairment or biliary obstruction, if you have hereditary angioedema, or if you have diabetes or severe kidney impairment. Elderly patients, those with high potassium levels or liver impairment, those with heart valve disease or cerebrovascular disorders, and those with gastrointestinal diseases should use this medication cautiously. This medication can cause various side effects, so if you experience symptoms such as headache, dizziness, cough, indigestion, muscle pain, skin rash, low blood pressure, or abnormal kidney function during use, consult a healthcare professional immediately. If you experience swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, or difficulty breathing—symptoms of angioedema—you should stop taking this medication immediately and seek treatment. Regular monitoring of blood potassium levels and kidney function is important during treatment. If taking other antihypertensives, diuretics, lithium, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, there may be interactions, so inform your doctor or pharmacist. It is advisable to stop taking it 24 hours prior to surgery, and caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery due to the risk of dizziness or fainting. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children and adolescents under 18 have not been established; therefore, it is not recommended.
