Efficacy & effects

Emergency contraceptive effect

View approved original text

Emergency contraceptives help prevent pregnancy when taken immediately after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure, within 72 hours. This medication effectively reduces the possibility of pregnancy, aiding women in managing their health and unintended pregnancies. It is thus recommended as a safe method to use even in sudden situations.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

For Levonorgestrel, take 1.5 mg orally. It is recommended to take it as soon as possible after intercourse, preferably within 12 hours. It must be taken no later than within 72 hours. If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of taking it, another 1.5 mg should be taken immediately.

Precautions

This medication is intended for temporary use as an emergency contraceptive and should not replace regular contraceptive methods. It cannot guarantee prevention of all pregnancies; therefore, if your menstrual period is more than 5 days late or if you have abnormal bleeding or pregnancy symptoms, you must confirm pregnancy status at a hospital. Women who are allergic to this medication, are pregnant or potentially pregnant, or have severe liver disease should not take it. Moreover, individuals with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolic disorders also should not take this medication. Patients at risk of ectopic pregnancy or those with digestive disorders, heart, or kidney diseases should use this medication with greater caution. After taking the medication, side effects such as dizziness, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, breast pain, menstrual irregularities, and fatigue may occur, but most symptoms will resolve within 48 hours. Using this medication more than once in a single menstrual cycle may reduce its effectiveness and increase the risk of side effects. Contraceptive methods that do not involve hormones, such as condoms, must be used until the next menstrual cycle starts. The medication must be taken within 72 hours following intercourse, as it will not be effective if taken later. This medication does not provide protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so caution against STI transmission is necessary. Individuals at risk of thrombosis should be aware of the potential for thromboembolic events while taking this medication, especially if there is a family or personal history. Taking this medication with drugs that activate liver enzymes may reduce its effectiveness, so consult a doctor if you are taking such medications. This medication should not be taken during pregnancy, and if breastfeeding, it is advised to suspend breastfeeding for at least 8 hours after taking it. Severe side effects due to overdose have not been reported, but nausea or bleeding may occur, in which case you should receive appropriate treatment based on your symptoms. This medication should be stored away from direct sunlight and kept out of reach of children; it is safest to store it in its original packaging.
