Relief of symptoms of gastric ulcer and gastroesophageal reflux disease and treatment effect of Helicobacter pylori infection
This medication is used to treat ulcers of the stomach or duodenum and helps alleviate symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also utilized for long-term maintenance therapy of gastroesophageal reflux disease to prevent recurrence. It effectively treats gastrointestinal ulcers when used in conjunction with antibiotics for Helicobacter pylori infection. Additionally, it is used for conditions characterized by excessive stomach acid secretion, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is widely employed for various gastrointestinal disorders to improve patients' symptoms.
For adults, the usual dosage is 10 mg of rabeprazole sodium administered orally once daily. Depending on symptoms, 20 mg may be given orally once daily. It may be administered for up to 8 weeks for gastric ulcers and up to 6 weeks for duodenal ulcers. For erosive or ulcerative gastroesophageal reflux disease, 10 mg or 20 mg may be administered orally once daily for 4 to 8 weeks. If the condition does not resolve after 8 weeks of treatment, an additional 8 weeks of 10 mg is recommended.
This medication should not be used in patients who are allergic to specific ingredients or benzimidazoles. Patients allergic to penicillin or macrolide antibiotics should also exercise caution, especially when used in combination for eradication of Helicobacter pylori. It is safe to refrain from administering this medication to patients taking specific drugs such as terfenadine, cisapride, pimodine, astemizole, atazanavir, and rilpivirine. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication. Caution is advised for elderly patients or those with impaired liver function, as well as patients with a history of hypersensitivity reactions to medications. Rare side effects such as skin rashes, itching, blood abnormalities, liver dysfunction, cardiovascular symptoms, gastrointestinal issues, neurological abnormalities, respiratory symptoms, musculoskeletal pain, skin disorders, visual disturbances, urinary problems, etc., may occur, and any unusual symptoms should prompt immediate consultation with healthcare professionals. Regular blood tests and liver function tests are recommended for long-term use, especially if taken for more than a year. This medication strongly suppresses gastric acid secretion, and long-term use may increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures, as well as lead to hypomagnesemia, so periodic checking of magnesium levels is advisable. Patients experiencing persistent diarrhea or pneumonia symptoms should report to healthcare professionals immediately for assessment. Caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery due to the potential for drowsiness. Since there may be interactions with other medications, especially when taken with warfarin, methotrexate, antibiotics, and antivirals, consultation with a specialist is necessary before taking them together. This medication should be swallowed whole and not chewed or crushed, and it must be kept out of the reach of children. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should not take this medication, and elderly patients should halt taking it and consult a physician if any symptoms occur due to the increased risk of side effects from decreased liver function.
