Improvement in type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone but may also be combined with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin when other oral hypoglycemic agents do not effectively improve blood sugar levels. Nutritional counseling, weight loss, and regular exercise are also very important in treating type 2 diabetes, as these lifestyle changes greatly enhance the effectiveness of medication therapy. Therefore, this medication is effectively used to improve blood sugar control.
This medication is taken orally once daily regardless of meals. For monotherapy, begin with 15 mg once daily, and if response is insufficient, the dose can be increased to 30 mg once daily. For combination therapy, continue with 15 mg once daily, with a maximum recommended dose not to exceed 30 mg once daily.
There is no experience with the use of this medication in children under 18 years of age, hence use is not recommended.
This medication is used to treat type 2 diabetes and acts to improve insulin resistance. Some patients taking this medication may experience heart-related issues, so if symptoms of heart failure such as sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, or leg swelling occur, they should seek medical attention immediately. This medication should not be taken by patients with heart failure or a history of heart failure. Additionally, this medication can cause fluid retention, which may worsen heart failure; therefore, caution is needed when prescribed to patients with cardiovascular conditions. Patients taking this medication should inform their doctor immediately if they experience symptoms such as hematuria, urinary difficulties, or urgency, as these may indicate a potential risk for bladder cancer. This medication is not administered to patients with impaired liver function, severe kidney disease, or active bladder cancer, or those with a history of bladder cancer. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication, and premenopausal women should use effective contraception as this medication may stimulate ovulation and increase the risk of pregnancy. When taken with other hypoglycemic agents or insulin, there may be an increased risk of hypoglycemia; therefore, patients should be well-informed about hypoglycemic symptoms and dose adjustments of other medications may be necessary. Regular liver function tests and blood glucose monitoring are recommended while taking this medication, and if symptoms such as sudden weight gain, swelling, or shortness of breath occur, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is needed. Common side effects of this medication may include edema, weight gain, headache, and upper respiratory infections, and there may be an increased risk of fractures, especially in women, so attention to bone health is necessary. Overdosage may not present with specific symptoms, but appropriate treatment should be given depending on the symptoms. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children have not been established, and caution is warranted in the elderly as well.
