Precautions

This medication helps in blood sugar control. However, one of the ingredients, metformin hydrochloride, can cause a serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, so caution is necessary. This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, those who are allergic to any of the components, patients with type 1 diabetes, severe renal impairment, acute heart disease, liver dysfunction, acute alcohol intoxication, or women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication. Additionally, there is a risk of hypoglycemia; therefore, when used in conjunction with sulfonylureas or insulin, dose adjustments may be required. Elderly patients with reduced renal function or those expecting changes in renal function should undergo regular kidney function checks and discontinue this medication if severe renal impairment occurs. Patients with unstable cardiac function, severe illnesses, or those undergoing surgery should use this medication with caution, and if undergoing tests using iodinated contrast agents, should discontinue its use before and after the test. This medication may cause gastrointestinal disturbances as side effects, such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and decreased appetite. Rarely, it may lead to acute pancreatitis or skin blistering diseases, and if such symptoms arise, immediate consultation with a doctor is necessary. It is preferable for pregnant or breastfeeding women to avoid this medication, especially if planning for pregnancy, in which case consulting with a doctor for appropriate treatment options is advisable. Use in children under 10 years of age is not recommended, as the safety and efficacy of this medication in that age group have not been established. Elderly individuals are at risk of renal function decline; therefore, dose adjustments and regular kidney function tests are required. Alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking this medication, and if taken with other medications that may affect renal function, consultation with a doctor is necessary. In case of overdose, serious side effects like lactic acidosis may occur, requiring immediate medical attention; dialysis may also be needed. This medication should be stored in a sealed container to protect it from moisture, and kept out of reach of children. It is best not to transfer it to another container. Finally, if sudden joint pain or blistering of the skin occurs during treatment with this medication, inform a doctor immediately.
