Improvement of symptoms and urinary flow in benign prostatic hyperplasia, reduction of surgical necessity
This medication improves symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia, reduces the size of the enlarged prostate, and facilitates urinary flow. It also helps reduce the frequency of acute urinary retention and decreases the necessity for surgeries such as transurethral resection of the prostate or radical prostatectomy. These effects help alleviate discomfort for patients and improve their quality of life.
Finasteride should be taken orally at a dose of 5 mg once daily, regardless of meals. Even if symptoms improve, a minimum of 6 months of treatment is necessary.
This medication should not be used in children or women, especially pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, as exposure to broken fragments of this drug should be avoided. It may affect mental health, so if symptoms of depression or mood changes occur, consult a healthcare professional immediately. People who are allergic to this medication or its components, or those with lactose intolerance or allergies to soy and peanuts should not take it. Patients with impaired liver function or lipid metabolism disorders should use it cautiously, and while the drug generally has mild side effects, erectile dysfunction-related adverse reactions may occur. There have been reports of an increased risk of breast cancer in some patients with long-term use, so caution is necessary. As this medication may increase the risk of prostate cancer, men over 55 should take it while undergoing regular examinations. This drug has few interactions with other medications, but inform your healthcare provider if you are taking any other medications. Pregnant or nursing women should not take this medication, and special caution is needed if taken during pregnancy due to potential effects on the fetus. Safety in children has not been established, thus it should not be used; however, older adults can take it without special dosage adjustments. This medication may decrease prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, which could affect test results, so this should be considered during PSA tests. No specific treatment is available for overdosing, but adhering to the recommended dosage is important. Keep out of reach of children, and avoid transferring to other containers.
