Emergency contraceptive effect
This medication is an emergency contraceptive that is to be taken immediately within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure to prevent unintended pregnancy. It is effective when taken promptly, reducing the chance of pregnancy. This drug is used to prevent unplanned pregnancies in sudden situations.
Levonorgestrel 1.5 mg should be administered orally. Take the dose as soon as possible after intercourse, with recommended intake within 12 hours, and no later than 72 hours. If vomiting occurs within 3 hours after taking, another 1.5 mg should be taken immediately.
This drug is an emergency contraceptive and is intended for temporary use to prevent pregnancy. It should not be used as a regular contraceptive method. Even if this drug is taken, it cannot prevent all pregnancies, so a pregnancy test should be performed if menstruation is more than 5 days late or if there are abnormal bleeding symptoms. Those with known allergies to this drug or who are pregnant, or patients with severe liver disease should not take it. Moreover, patients with lactose intolerance or specific genetic metabolic disorders should not use this drug. Patients at risk of ectopic pregnancy or with serious digestive disorders such as Crohn's disease, as well as those with heart or kidney diseases should use this drug cautiously. Side effects may include dizziness, headache, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, breast tenderness, abnormal menstrual bleeding, and fatigue, most of which resolve within 48 hours. Skin allergic reactions may occur, and thrombosis may rarely develop, so individuals at high risk for thrombosis should be cautious. This drug should only be used once in a menstrual cycle, and if there is uncertainty about the timing of intercourse, its effectiveness may decrease. Non-hormonal contraceptive methods, such as condoms, must be used until the next menstruation starts. Once 72 hours have passed after intercourse, this drug will no longer be effective, so it should not be taken after this time. Additionally, having intercourse within 72 hours after taking this drug may pose a risk of pregnancy. Menstruation usually starts on the scheduled date after taking this drug, but it may occur a few days earlier or later. If abnormal bleeding occurs or if menstruation is absent for more than 5 days, a pregnancy test should be performed. This drug does not prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so alternative methods should be used to prevent STIs. For starting regular contraceptive methods after taking this drug, consultation with a healthcare provider is recommended. Using this drug multiple times in one menstrual cycle could lead to higher hormone levels, which may not be healthy. The effectiveness of this drug may decrease if taken along with medications that induce liver enzymes, so if such medications are being taken, other contraceptive methods should be considered. This drug should not be used during pregnancy, and if you are breastfeeding, it is advised to refrain from breastfeeding for at least 8 hours after taking it. There have been no reports of severe side effects from overdosing, but nausea or bleeding may occur, and treatment should be provided based on symptoms. This drug should be stored away from direct sunlight and kept out of reach of children, preferably in its original packaging.
