This medication is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It is particularly effective in reducing the occurrence of spinal fractures. However, its effect on non-spinal fractures has not been definitively proven. Therefore, it is mainly used to mitigate the risk of spinal-related fractures. It contributes to improving skeletal health as a medication that helps manage osteoporosis.

How to take

Adult dose

Take 1 tablet (20mg as Bazedoxifene) once daily, regardless of meals.

Precautions

This medication may increase the risk of blood clotting disorders, such as venous thromboembolism. Women with a history of or risk factors for deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or retinal vein thrombosis should avoid using this medication. This medication is intended only for postmenopausal women and should not be used by premenopausal women, those who are pregnant, or those who are breastfeeding. Women who might become pregnant should also not take this medication. While this medication does not induce endometrial hyperplasia, if any uterine bleeding occurs during treatment, it is essential to seek medical attention. Furthermore, its safety in breast cancer patients has not been adequately studied, so it should not be used for the prevention or treatment of breast cancer. Patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or a history of venous thromboembolism, unexplained uterine bleeding, symptoms of endometrial cancer, and rare genetic diseases such as lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Patients with hypertriglyceridemia or severe renal or liver dysfunction should use this medication with caution. In particular, in patients with severe liver dysfunction, blood levels of this medication may significantly increase, so it is not recommended. This medication may cause side effects such as facial flushing, leg cramps, drowsiness, dry mouth, rash, itching, muscle cramps, elevated blood triglycerides, elevated alanine aminotransferase (ALT), elevated aspartate aminotransferase (AST), vision impairment, blurred vision, photophobia, visual field defects, visual disturbances, dry eyes, eyelid swelling, eyelid spasms, pain in the eyes, and if these symptoms are severe, consultation with a doctor is necessary. Particularly, if visual disturbances or eye-related symptoms occur, immediate medical attention should be sought. When driving or operating machinery, caution is required due to the risk of accidents from drowsiness or visual disturbances. If these symptoms are present, care should be taken. The potential for drug interactions with this medication is low; however, the concentrations of some medications may change when taken concurrently, so if other medications are being taken, consultation with a doctor or pharmacist is recommended. In case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so appropriate treatment should be provided based on symptoms. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container for safety.
