View approved original text

In patients classified as high risk for coronary artery disease, using 2 mg of pitavastatin as monotherapy effectively controls LDL cholesterol levels. However, this may accompany mixed dyslipidemia characterized by somewhat elevated triglyceride levels and lower HDL cholesterol levels. This medication primarily helps reduce LDL cholesterol, thereby decreasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Thus, pitavastatin is used for the treatment of hyperlipidemia in patients with mixed dyslipidemia.

Precautions

This medication is used to lower blood lipid levels. However, caution is necessary as there may be muscular issues when taking this medication. Especially, the risk of muscle damage may increase when taken with other lipid-lowering agents like statins or fibrates. If symptoms such as muscle pain, weakness, or cramps occur, a healthcare provider should be immediately consulted, and blood tests may be required to assess for muscle damage. Special attention is needed before taking this medication for patients over 65 years of age, those with poor kidney function, and those with uncontrolled hypothyroidism. This medication can also affect liver function, so regular liver function tests are necessary, and the medication should be discontinued if liver enzyme levels rise significantly. Furthermore, patients with acute pancreatitis or gallbladder diseases, severe renal impairment, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, and children under 18 years of age should not take this medication. As this medication can interact with other drugs, it is essential to inform the healthcare provider of any other medications being taken. Caution is especially needed when taken in conjunction with anticoagulants, certain antibiotics, and immunosuppressants. During treatment with this drug, regular monitoring of blood lipid levels and kidney and liver functions should be conducted, and any unusual symptoms should be reported to the medical staff immediately. It is also recommended to take this medication after meals, as dizziness may occur when driving or operating machinery. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication, and if being taken, it should be discontinued immediately and the healthcare provider consulted. In case of overdose, since there is no specific antidote, treatment and supportive measures should be based on symptoms. Lastly, this medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container for safety.
