This medication is used for patients with essential hypertension and effectively controls blood pressure. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular mortality in patients aged 55 and older with a high risk of major cardiovascular diseases. It is particularly suitable for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or transient ischemic attacks, or those with high-risk diabetes resulting in end-organ damage. It is used to enhance cardiovascular health and prevent complications.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, Telmisartan should be taken at a dose of 40 mg once daily orally with water, irrespective of meals. Depending on the patient, a dose of 20 mg once daily may also be effective. If needed, the dose can be increased up to 80 mg once daily, with maximum blood pressure-lowering effects appearing within 4-8 weeks after dose increment. For reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, 80 mg once daily is recommended.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus, especially during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. It should not be administered to individuals allergic to this medication or its components, pregnant women or those who might become pregnant, nursing mothers, patients with severe liver impairment, patients with hereditary angioedema, or patients with diabetes or moderate to severe kidney impairment. Caution should be exercised when administering to elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, mild to moderate liver impairment, heart valve disease, ischemic heart disease, gastrointestinal disease, renal artery hypertension, or severe kidney impairment. During treatment with this medication, various adverse reactions such as hypotension, hyperkalemia, worsening of kidney function, angioedema, liver dysfunction, interstitial lung disease, and rhabdomyolysis may occur, so immediate consultation with medical personnel is necessary if symptoms arise. Particularly, if there is a rapid drop in blood pressure or symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath, or swelling of the face or lips occur, immediate treatment should be sought. This medication may enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect when taken with other antihypertensive medications, so caution is required, and kidney function or electrolyte levels should be frequently monitored when taken with specific drugs. It is advisable to halt this medication at least 24 hours before any surgical procedure. This medication contains sorbitol, which is not suitable for patients with fructose intolerance. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery due to the possibility of dizziness or fainting. This medication is not recommended for children or adolescents under 18 as safety and effectiveness have not been established. In cases of overdose, hypotension, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur, necessitating immediate medical attention.
