Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used for the treatment of essential hypertension. It also helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, stroke, and peripheral artery disease in patients over 55 years of age who are unable to use ACE inhibitors. It is particularly effective in lowering the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, this medication plays an important role not only in managing hypertension but also in preventing cardiovascular complications. It is used to improve patients' cardiovascular health and reduce disease risk.
For essential hypertension, the recommended dosage is 40 mg of telmisartan orally once daily, taken with water, and it can be taken regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may be effective, and if necessary, the dose can be increased to up to 80 mg once daily. The maximum antihypertensive effect occurs 4 to 8 weeks after starting treatment. For the purpose of reducing cardiovascular disease risk, 80 mg once daily with water is indicated.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. It should not be used in individuals allergic to this medication or its components, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, patients with severe liver impairment, certain hereditary angioedema patients, and patients with diabetes or severe kidney dysfunction. Elderly patients or those with hyperkalemia, mild to moderate liver dysfunction, heart valve disease, gastrointestinal disorders, or renal artery hypertension should use this medication cautiously and consult healthcare professionals before administration. While taking this medication, various adverse reactions may occur, including infection, hypotension, liver dysfunction, renal impairment, angioedema, hyperkalemia, interstitial pneumonia, and rhabdomyolysis, so patients should inform their healthcare provider immediately if symptoms occur. In particular, if rapid drops in blood pressure, dizziness, fainting, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or lips occur, immediate medical attention should be sought. This medication may interact with other antihypertensive medications or specific drugs, so patients should inform their healthcare provider of any other medications they are taking. Patients with poor renal function should regularly check their serum potassium and creatinine levels, and those with reduced blood volume should be cautious of hypotension risk. Patients undergoing surgery should ideally discontinue this medication 24 hours before the procedure. This medication contains sorbitol; it should not be taken by patients with fructose intolerance. Caution should be exercised while driving or operating dangerous machinery as dizziness or fainting may occur. Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients under 18 years of age have not been established, and use is not recommended. In case of overdose, hypotension, abnormal heart rate, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur, so the prescribed dosage should be strictly observed, and the patient should immediately visit a hospital if any abnormal symptoms arise. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container is not advisable for maintaining its quality.
