Improvement of type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control)
This medication is used to assist blood sugar control in individuals with type 2 diabetes in combination with dietary and exercise regimens. It can also be administered alone; however, it may be combined with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin when there is no improvement in blood sugar despite using other oral hypoglycemic agents. Additionally, nutritional counseling, weight loss, and lifestyle modifications such as exercise are very important and are essential not only for initial treatment but also for maintaining the effectiveness of pharmacotherapy. This comprehensive approach effectively improves blood sugar control.
This medication is administered orally once daily regardless of meal. In monotherapy, start at 15 mg once daily and may increase to 30 mg once daily as needed. In combination therapy, administer 15 mg once daily when used with sulfonylureas, metformin, or insulin. The maximum recommended dosage should not exceed 30 mg once daily.
The safety and effectiveness in children under 18 years of age have not been established, hence it is not recommended for use.
This drug is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and requires insulin to exert its blood sugar-lowering effect. It may worsen or newly induce heart failure, so it should not be used in patients with heart failure. If sudden weight gain, shortness of breath, or edema occurs during treatment, immediate medical attention should be sought. As it can cause fluid retention, leading to edema or exacerbation of heart failure, special caution should be exercised in patients with edema or heart disease. Patients with active bladder cancer or a history of bladder cancer should not use this medication, and if hematuria or urinary disorders arise during treatment, they should notify their physician immediately. Patients with poor liver function should have regular liver function tests before and during treatment, and should seek medical attention if signs of liver damage appear. Hypoglycemic symptoms may occur during treatment; particular caution should be observed when it is taken with insulin or sulfonylureas due to the risk of hypoglycemia. Weight gain and edema can occur frequently, therefore it is important to regularly monitor weight and edema status. In premenopausal women, this drug may promote ovulation and increase the possibility of pregnancy; hence, appropriate contraception should be utilized. Elderly patients, those with impaired renal or liver function, and patients with cardiovascular disease should be managed more cautiously during treatment with this medication. Pregnant or potentially pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should avoid using this medication or consult a healthcare professional. Due to potential drug interactions, it is crucial to inform your physician or pharmacist of any other medications being taken. Regular blood sugar and liver function tests should be performed during the treatment period, and any unusual symptoms should be reported to healthcare personnel immediately. This medication has not been established for safety and efficacy in children and is therefore not recommended for use in this population. In case of overdose, appropriate treatment should be administered according to symptoms, and medications should be kept out of reach of children.
