Precautions

This drug contains two main ingredients, linagliptin and metformin, and is used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. One of the most important precautions when taking this medication is the risk of lactic acidosis, a serious metabolic complication. Lactic acidosis is rare but can occur when kidney function deteriorates rapidly or there are issues with heart or liver function; therefore, patients with impaired kidney function or those who are seriously ill or dehydrated should not take this medication. Additionally, individuals allergic to the ingredients in this drug or those with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, pregnant women, or nursing mothers should not use this medication. When taken with other diabetes treatments that carry a risk of hypoglycemia, caution is necessary as symptoms of hypoglycemia may occur, and dosage adjustments of other medications may be required as necessary. Elderly patients with reduced kidney function should be particularly cautious and should have regular kidney function tests. The medication may need to be temporarily discontinued before and after acute illness or surgery. Rare side effects such as acute pancreatitis or skin blistering have been reported, so if severe abdominal pain or skin rashes occur, patients should consult a physician immediately. The metformin ingredient may lower vitamin B12 levels; therefore, regular monitoring of vitamin B12 levels is advisable during prolonged use. This medication can interact with other drugs, so patients must inform their doctor or pharmacist about any other medications they are taking, especially when combined with drugs that may affect kidney function. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should avoid this medication; insulin therapy is recommended for blood sugar control. This drug is not recommended for children under 10 years old and adolescents aged 10 to 17, as safety and efficacy have not been established. The medication should be stored away from moisture and in a place out of the reach of children, and its effect on driving or operating machinery is unknown. In case of overdose, serious side effects like lactic acidosis may occur, requiring immediate medical attention.
