This medication is used to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. It also helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular disease in high-risk patients aged 55 and older who cannot tolerate or are contraindicated for ACE inhibitors. This treatment can improve cardiovascular health and prevent serious complications.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, the recommended dose is 40 mg of telmisartan taken orally once daily with water, and it can be taken regardless of meals. For some patients, a dose of 20 mg once daily may be effective, and if necessary, the dose can be increased up to 80 mg once daily. The maximum blood pressure-lowering effect is observed between 4 to 8 weeks after increasing the dose. To reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, the recommended dose is 80 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication can cause severe harm to the fetus and newborn if taken during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. It should not be used in patients with allergies to this medication, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients with severe liver impairment, hereditary angioedema, and certain kidney diseases. Caution is required when using this medication in the elderly, patients with hyperkalemia, liver disease, and valvular heart disease, as care must be taken not to lower blood pressure too much. During treatment, abnormal reactions such as infection, blood pressure drop, liver dysfunction, kidney impairment, angioedema, and hyperkalemia may occur, so symptoms should be well monitored. In particular, if symptoms of hypoglycemia or angioedema occur, the medication should be stopped immediately and medical advice should be sought. This medication may affect kidney function, so regular checks of kidney function and blood potassium levels are important. Additionally, low blood pressure symptoms may occur when there is a lack of blood volume or sodium, so any such conditions should be corrected beforehand. Be careful of drug interactions when taken with other antihypertensives, certain diuretics, lithium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, etc. This medication is not recommended for breastfeeding women and it is advisable not to use it in pediatric patients or adolescents under 18 years of age as safety and efficacy have not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms such as low blood pressure, dizziness, and acute kidney failure may occur, so immediate medical attention is needed. Caution should be taken while driving or operating machinery as dizziness or fainting may occur during treatment. Finally, keep this medication out of the reach of children and do not open the packaging until right before use.

Hives, severe swelling, chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, pallor, severe allergic reactions, severe rash with high fever, blisters, peeling skin, pain of mouth/eye mucosa, severe cutaneous adverse reactions, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, coughing with fever associated respiratory abnormalities, jaundice, very severe malaise, liver abnormalities, sudden and very severe headache, lightning-like headache.
