Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used for the treatment of essential hypertension. It also helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in high-risk patients, particularly those over 55 years old with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, transient ischemic attack, or those with diabetes with confirmed end-organ damage. This medication is used as an alternative when ACE inhibitors cannot be used. The drug effectively lowers the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular diseases, thereby improving patient health. Therefore, it is widely utilized for treating everything from essential hypertension to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.
As Telmisartan, it should be administered orally at a dose of 40 mg once daily with water, and can be taken regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, a dose of 20 mg once daily may also be effective. If necessary, the dosage can be increased up to 80 mg once daily. The maximum antihypertensive effect is achieved 4 to 8 weeks after starting treatment. To reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, it is recommended to take 80 mg orally with water once daily.
