Efficacy & effects

Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

This medication is used for effectively managing blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular-related mortality in patients aged 55 and older who are at risk of cardiovascular disease and cannot use ACE inhibitors. It is particularly beneficial for high-risk diabetic patients with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or transient ischemic attack, or who have evidence of end-organ damage. This drug contributes to improving the patient's health by reducing the potential occurrence of major cardiovascular diseases.

How to take

Adult dose

Take 40 mg orally once daily with water, and can be taken regardless of meals. In some patients, 20 mg once daily may be effective, and if necessary, it may be increased to 80 mg once daily. For the purpose of reducing cardiovascular disease risk, an oral dose of 80 mg once daily is recommended. Patients with liver impairment should not exceed 40 mg daily.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn, especially during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. It should not be used in patients with known allergies to this drug or its ingredients, in pregnant or nursing women, in patients with severe liver or biliary disease, in patients with a history of hereditary angioedema, or in patients with diabetes or severe renal impairment. This drug should be used with caution in the elderly, patients with high serum potassium levels, patients with impaired liver function, and in patients with heart valve disease or cerebrovascular disorders, as there is a risk of excessively low blood pressure leading to problems in the heart or brain. When taking this medication, watch for symptom changes as side effects such as infections, blood pressure drops, liver function abnormalities, renal function deterioration, angioedema, and hyperkalemia may occur. Particularly, diabetic patients should be alert to symptoms of hypoglycemia, and if swelling of the face or lips occurs, they should stop taking the drug immediately and seek medical attention. Patients with renal impairment should often monitor potassium and creatinine levels through blood tests, as low blood volume or salt deficiency may lead to symptoms of low blood pressure, thus caution is required. There may be interactions when taken with other antihypertensives, diuretics, lithium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, so consultation with a physician or pharmacist is necessary. Pregnant or nursing women should ideally not take this medication, and if unavoidable, should consult a specialist and discontinue breastfeeding. Use in children under 18 years is not recommended as safety and efficacy have not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms such as low blood pressure, dizziness, and renal impairment may occur, so immediate treatment in a hospital is required, noting that this drug cannot be removed by dialysis. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container should be avoided to reduce the risk of accidents or degradation of quality. Caution is advised as dizziness or fainting may occur while driving or operating dangerous machinery during treatment.
