Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used to treat essential hypertension and helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, particularly myocardial infarction, stroke, and fatality due to cardiovascular disease, in high-risk patients aged 55 and older. It is particularly effective when ACE inhibitors cannot be used. It can stabilize blood pressure and improve cardiovascular health.
Essential Hypertension: It is recommended to administer Telmisartan at a dose of 40 mg orally once daily, which may be effective at 20 mg once daily depending on the patient. If necessary, the dosage can be increased to a maximum of 80 mg once daily. Risk Reduction of Cardiovascular Disease: It is recommended to administer 80 mg orally once daily. Liver impaired patients: Use with caution in mildly to moderately liver impaired patients, do not exceed 40 mg once daily.
This medication can cause serious risks to the fetus and newborn, especially during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. It should not be used by individuals who have an allergic reaction to this medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have severe liver dysfunction, have a history of certain angioedema, have hyperglycemia or severe kidney dysfunction. Elderly patients or those with high levels of potassium in the blood, liver dysfunction, heart valve disease, ischemic heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, or renovascular hypertension should take this medication cautiously and be monitored continuously. While taking this medication, various adverse reactions such as infections, low blood pressure, blood abnormalities, liver dysfunction, kidney dysfunction, myalgia, gastrointestinal disorders, allergic reactions, and others may occur, so consult a doctor immediately if any unusual symptoms appear. Be particularly cautious as serious side effects like hypotension, dizziness, shock symptoms, angioedema, hyperkalemia, liver dysfunction, interstitial pneumonia, and rhabdomyolysis may occur. Patients with kidney disorders should regularly check serum potassium and creatinine levels, and take measures to regulate their condition before taking this medication due to the increased risk of hypotension in cases of volume depletion. Additionally, this medication may interact with other antihypertensives, diuretics, potassium supplements, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, lithium, digoxin, etc., so it's essential to follow a specialist's instructions when using it with other medications. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not use this medication, and it is advisable to avoid this medication during breastfeeding as well. Children under 18 years old are not recommended to take this medication as its safety and efficacy in this age group have not been established. Elderly patients should use this medication cautiously due to the risk of stroke from excessive blood pressure lowering. In cases of overdose, hypotension, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur, requiring immediate medical treatment, and caution is necessary as it cannot be removed by dialysis. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container should be avoided as it may adversely affect its quality. Drowsiness or dizziness may occur, so caution is required when driving or operating dangerous machinery.
