Improvement of gastric and duodenal ulcers and gastric mucosal lesions, relief of hyperacidity
This medication is helpful in treating ulcers of the stomach and duodenum, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also effective in preventing Mendelson syndrome before surgery and treating ulcers after surgery, as well as ulcers due to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It improves inflammation or bleeding of the gastric mucosa during acute and chronic gastritis exacerbations and is also used for upper gastrointestinal bleeding and acute stress ulcers. Additionally, it helps relieve symptoms of hyperacidity, heartburn, and acid regurgitation. In summary, this medication is used effectively to treat various ulcers, inflammation, and related symptoms of the stomach and duodenum.
As ranitidine, a single dose of 150 mg is administered orally twice daily, in the morning and at bedtime. For gastric and duodenal ulcers, 150 mg is administered orally twice daily or 300 mg once daily at bedtime. For patients with recurrent ulcers, maintenance therapy at 150 mg once daily at bedtime is given. For gastroesophageal reflux disease, administer 150 mg once daily, twice daily for 8 weeks.
For children aged 8 to 18 years, a single dose of 150 mg (2 mg per kg of body weight) may be administered up to twice daily.
This drug should not be used in patients who have a history of allergy or hypersensitivity reactions to any of its components. Administration should also be avoided in patients with a history of acute porphyria. In patients with poor kidney function, dosage adjustment or interval modification is necessary as this drug may not be adequately excreted, leading to increased blood concentration. Caution is also required in patients with impaired liver function. Caution should be exercised when administering to patients who have previously experienced drug hypersensitivity or to elderly patients. Patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs need to be particularly cautious, and their condition should be regularly monitored. Since this drug can mask symptoms of gastric cancer, patients with gastric ulcers or those over middle age who have newly developed dyspeptic symptoms should confirm the presence of malignant diseases before using this medication. Patients with Helicobacter pylori-positive gastric and duodenal ulcers should undergo eradication therapy. This drug can rarely cause serious allergic reactions or shock, so if any adverse reactions occur during administration, treatment should be stopped immediately and medical attention sought. Various side effects such as blood abnormalities, liver function abnormalities, cardiac rhythm problems, gastrointestinal symptoms, and neurological symptoms can occur, so if any unusual symptoms appear, immediate consultation with medical professionals is required. Regular blood tests, liver function tests, and kidney function tests should be conducted for long-term use or high-dose administration. Elderly, chronically ill patients, and immunocompromised individuals may be at increased risk for pneumonia, warranting caution. Patients should avoid driving or operating dangerous machinery if experiencing dizziness or drowsiness. Drug interactions may occur; therefore, patients should inform healthcare providers of any other medications they are taking. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant and those who are breastfeeding should carefully consider the risks and benefits if this medication is necessary. Safety in children has not been sufficiently confirmed, hence caution is necessary in its use. Although specific overdose symptoms are rare, appropriate treatment such as vomiting or gastric lavage may be required. It is safe to keep this medication out of the reach of children and not to transfer it to other containers. This drug reduces gastric acid secretion, which may promote bacterial growth in the gastrointestinal tract, requiring caution including ophthalmic examinations for long-term use.
