How it is given

Adult administration

Administer 100 μg of selenium via intramuscular or intravenous injection daily. If necessary, the dosage can be increased to 200 μg per day. When administered as an addition to basic total parenteral nutrition (TPN) intravenous injection, the daily dose should be 100 μg of selenium.

Precautions

This drug contains selenium and should not be used in patients with selenium toxicity. People allergic to this medication or its components should not receive this drug. Pain or allergic reactions may rarely occur during injection, and if symptoms such as dermatitis, foul odor during sweating or breathing, hair loss, anxiety, or vomiting occur, administration should be stopped immediately. Care must be taken to avoid precipitation when mixed with other intravenous infusion solutions, and if the pH of the solution is too low or mixed with reducing agents like vitamin C, selenium may precipitate and not be absorbed by the body. When mixed with other medications, it is essential to check for precipitation or color changes; if any abnormalities are noted, the medication should not be used. This medication contains sodium, so patients on a low-sodium diet should consider this fact. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should use this drug cautiously only when the therapeutic benefits outweigh the risks of fetal malformation. The safety of this drug for nursing mothers has not been established, and it is recommended to discontinue breastfeeding or stop using the drug while on treatment. Overdose may result in garlic breath, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and chronic overdose can affect nail and hair growth and cause peripheral nerve disorders. In case of overdose, treatment such as gastric lavage, induction of urination, or high-dose vitamin C should be implemented, and in severe cases, dialysis may be needed to remove selenium. In this case, specific antidote Dimercaprol should not be used as it may exacerbate selenium toxicity. This drug should be kept out of the reach of children and stored in a sealed container in a dry, room-temperature place, maintaining its original packaging. It should be used immediately after opening, and transferring it to another container should be avoided as it may pose a risk of accidents and compromise quality.
