Benign prostatic hyperplasia is a condition commonly occurring in men after middle age, characterized by symptoms such as difficulty urinating due to enlargement of the prostate. This medication helps to reduce the size of the enlarged prostate and improves urinary flow, alleviating voiding dysfunction. It also helps to decrease the frequency of acute urinary retention and reduces the need for surgeries such as transurethral resection of the prostate or prostatectomy. In other words, it is used to effectively improve symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, thereby enhancing the quality of life for patients.

How to take

Adult dose

Administer 5 mg of finasteride orally once a day, regardless of meals. Treatment for at least 6 months is necessary even if symptoms improve during administration.

Precautions

This medicine should not be used in children or women, and particularly women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid touching broken pieces of this medicine. This is because the drug inhibits the conversion of certain hormones in men, which may affect the development of genital organs in male fetuses. While taking this medication, depression or mood changes may occur, so if feelings of depression or unusual symptoms appear, it is important to consult a healthcare professional immediately. Patients with an allergy to this medication or with specific genetic lactase deficiency disorders, as well as those with allergies to soybean oil, soy, or peanuts, should avoid taking it. Patients with impaired liver function or issues related to fat metabolism should use this medication cautiously, and it is advisable to check blood lipid levels regularly. This medication may cause side effects related to sexual function, such as erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, and ejaculation disorders, which are mostly mild and temporary. In rare cases, long-term use has been reported to be associated with male breast cancer, although a direct correlation with this drug has not yet been clearly established. This medication may slightly increase the risk of developing certain high-grade types of prostate cancer, so regular examinations are necessary before and during treatment. There are minimal interactions with other medications, and elderly patients can use it without special dosage adjustments. During the treatment, the amount of ejaculate may decrease, but this often does not significantly impact overall sexual function. Pregnant women should avoid taking or touching this medication, and nursing mothers are also advised not to use it. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established, so it is not used in this population. There is no specific treatment for overdose, but adhering to the recommended dosage is important. When storing, keep it out of reach of children and avoid transferring it to other containers.
