Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood pressure control in essential hypertension

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

Combination therapy with amlodipine and olmesartan medoxomil is used in patients with essential hypertension who do not achieve adequate blood pressure control with a single drug. These drugs help lower blood pressure by dilating blood vessels and improve heart and vascular health. This treatment effectively reduces the risk of complications from hypertension and improves blood pressure control.

Precautions

This drug can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn if taken during the second or third trimester of pregnancy; therefore, it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. This drug is contraindicated for patients with an allergy to this drug or its components or with certain heart and kidney diseases, and for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It should not be used in patients with very low blood pressure, acute heart issues, or severe liver or kidney disease. Patients with reduced blood volume or impaired renal function may experience hypotension when starting this medication, so monitoring of their condition is necessary. This drug may affect kidney function, requiring regular blood tests for patients with kidney disease or those who have undergone kidney transplantation. Patients with impaired liver function or specific heart valve diseases should also use this drug with caution. The diuretic component in this medication may cause electrolyte imbalances, necessitating regular monitoring of electrolyte levels in the blood. Since blood pressure may drop too low, patients should avoid hazardous activities while taking this medication if they experience dizziness or drowsiness. This drug may interact with other medications, particularly lithium, certain pain relievers, and other antihypertensive agents, so consult a healthcare professional if taking these. The use of this drug is not recommended during breastfeeding, and if necessary, breastfeeding or the drug itself may need to be discontinued. Its safety and efficacy have not been established in pediatric patients under 18 years of age, so its use is not recommended in this population. In elderly patients, starting at a lower dose and careful monitoring is advisable, taking into account impaired kidney and liver function. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, arrhythmias, and electrolyte imbalances may occur, necessitating immediate medical attention.
