This medication assists in maintaining abstinence after detoxification in patients with alcohol dependence, used alongside psychological counseling. In other words, it supports individuals to break free from alcohol dependence and sustain sobriety. This plays a crucial role in helping patients restore and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

How to take

Adult dose

○ Adults : 1. 60 kg or more : Administer 666 mg of acamprosate calcium orally 3 times daily without chewing. 2. Less than 60 kg : Administer 666 mg of this drug in the morning and 333 mg each at lunch and dinner orally without chewing.

Precautions

This medication should not be used during the alcohol detoxification period, as taking it during detoxification may affect the drug's efficacy. It should not be administered to patients with hypersensitivity to this medication or those with severe kidney failure (a condition with severely reduced kidney function) or severe liver failure (a condition with severely impaired liver function). In such cases, the drug can accumulate in the body, increasing the risk of side effects. Women who are pregnant, possibly pregnant, or breastfeeding should not take this medication due to the potential harm it may cause to the fetus or newborn. It is advisable not to use this medication in children or teenagers under 18 years of age, as well as in elderly individuals over 65, since its safety and effectiveness have not been sufficiently confirmed. Especially in the elderly, there is a risk of drug accumulation due to decreased kidney function. Patients with kidney stones should use caution when taking high doses of this medication, as it may increase calcium deposits in the kidneys. This medication does not reduce or eliminate withdrawal symptoms from abstinence and does not prevent ongoing alcohol abuse. Therefore, it should be used in conjunction with the treatment for abstinence to be effective. During treatment with this drug, psychological changes such as depression or suicidal thoughts may occur, so patients and guardians should closely monitor for these symptoms. This medication may affect mental functions, and caution is required when driving or operating dangerous machinery. Taking this medication with food may reduce its absorption, so the method of administration should be followed as directed by a physician. In case of overdose, treatments such as gastric lavage may be necessary, and in severe cases, acute hypercalcemia (abnormally high calcium levels in the blood) may occur, requiring immediate consultation with healthcare professionals. Keep this medication out of the reach of children, and avoid transferring it to other containers, as this may lead to accidents.
