Treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (including erosive esophagitis), treatment and prevention of relapse of Helicobacter pylori positive peptic ulcers, relief of upper gastrointestinal symptoms related to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, treatment and prevention of gastric and duodenal ulcers, treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and maintenance therapy to prevent rebleeding from gastric ulcers.
This medication is used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and improvement of erosive esophagitis. It also helps with long-term maintenance therapy to prevent recurrence in patients with esophagitis and alleviate symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease without esophagitis. It is effective in treating and preventing recurrence of duodenal ulcers and peptic ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. Additionally, it is utilized for symptoms in the upper gastrointestinal tract associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and for the treatment of gastric ulcers and prevention of related ulcers. It is used in the treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and is suitable for maintenance therapy after preventing rebleeding from gastric or duodenal ulcers. This medication is broadly used for treatment and prevention of various gastrointestinal diseases.
This medication should be swallowed with liquids such as water and must not be chewed or crushed. 1) Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) - Treatment of erosive esophagitis: 40 mg once daily for 4 weeks. If symptoms persist, an additional 4 weeks is required. - Maintenance therapy for prevention of recurrence: 20 mg once daily. - Treatment of symptoms without esophagitis: 20 mg once daily. If symptoms persist after 4 weeks, further medical advice is necessary.
Adolescents over 12 years - Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) - Treatment of erosive esophagitis: 40 mg once daily for 4 weeks. If symptoms persist, additional 4 weeks of medication is required. - For gastroesophageal reflux disease without esophagitis:
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, patients who are allergic or have had adverse reactions to this medication or its ingredients, or to benzimidazole derivatives, should not take it. Additionally, patients with hypersensitivity to penicillin antibiotics or macrolide antibiotics should not take this medication when combined with those antibiotics for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori. Patients or nursing mothers taking certain medications, such as terfenadine, cisapride, pimodidine, astemizole, atazanavir, nelfinavir, or rilpivirine, should avoid using this medication. This medication can cause various side effects, which may include blood-related problems such as leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and agranulocytosis, which are rare. Immunologically, symptoms like fever, angioedema, and severe allergic reactions may occur. In metabolic and nutritional aspects, edema, hyponatremia, and hypomagnesemia have been reported; hypomagnesemia could also affect calcium and potassium levels. Mental health issues such as insomnia, anxiety, confusion, depression, and rarely aggression or hallucinations may arise. Common neurological side effects include headaches, dizziness, and drowsiness. Gastrointestinal issues may include abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, with rare reports of pancreatitis or gastroenteritis. Liver function abnormalities or jaundice can occur, and liver failure may rarely happen, necessitating caution regarding liver health. Dermatological reactions may include rashes, itching, hair loss, and severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome in severe cases. Musculoskeletal issues like fractures, arthralgia, myalgia have also been reported. Long-term use of this medication requires regular checks for abnormalities. It can suppress gastric acid secretion, possibly promoting bacterial growth in the stomach and slightly increasing infection risk. This is particularly important in hospitalized patients, who may have a higher risk of diarrhea caused by Clostridium difficile. Furthermore, this medication may increase the risk of osteoporotic fractures, so patients at risk of fractures require proper monitoring. This medication can interact with certain drugs, so it is essential to consult with a doctor or pharmacist if other medications are being taken. The safety of this medication during pregnancy has not been fully established, so caution is advised; it is also best not to take it during breastfeeding. In case of overdose, there are no specific antidotes; appropriate treatment should be provided based on symptoms. It should be stored out of reach of children.
