This medication helps effectively manage blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. It can be safely taken even in cases where ACE inhibitors are not tolerated. Additionally, it is used to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death due to cardiovascular diseases in high-risk patients aged 55 or older with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or transient ischemic attack, as well as in high-risk diabetic patients. This medication is effective in preventing serious complications of cardiovascular diseases and improving cardiovascular health in patients.

How to take

Adult dose

Essential hypertension: it is recommended to take 40 mg of telmisartan orally once daily, and based on patient response, 20 mg once daily may be effective. If necessary, the dose may be titrated up to 80 mg once daily. Reduction of cardiovascular disease risk: it is recommended to take 80 mg orally once daily. Patients with liver impairment: should not exceed 40 mg once daily.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn during pregnancy; therefore, if pregnancy is confirmed, it should be discontinued immediately. Women with allergic reactions to this medication, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, patients with severe liver disease, and those with certain hereditary conditions should not take this medication. Elderly patients or those with hyperkalemia, liver impairment, and patients with heart and kidney diseases should use this medication cautiously and be careful to prevent blood pressure from dropping too low. During treatment, blood pressure, kidney function, and serum potassium levels should be regularly monitored to check for any abnormalities. While this medication lowers blood pressure, side effects such as dizziness, headache, dyspepsia, and skin rash may sometimes occur; if symptoms are severe, consultation with a physician is needed. If symptoms of angioedema, such as swelling of the face, lips, or tongue occur, the medication should be stopped immediately and healthcare personnel should be notified. Severe hypotension, renal failure, liver dysfunction, and shock may occur, so if these symptoms are suspected, immediate treatment is required. When taking this medication in conjunction with other antihypertensive drugs, diuretics, or potassium supplements, the risk of side effects may increase due to interactions, so it is essential to consult a doctor or pharmacist. Women planning to become pregnant or who may be pregnant should consult with healthcare providers before taking this medication and should avoid using it during pregnancy. During breastfeeding, this medication is also not recommended; if it must be taken, it is advisable to discontinue breastfeeding. This medication is not recommended for children under 18 years as its safety and efficacy have not been established. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur, requiring immediate medical attention. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur while driving or operating hazardous machinery, so caution is necessary.
