Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood pressure control in essential hypertension

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

The combination therapy of Amlodipine and Olmesartan Medoxomil is used when blood pressure control is insufficient in patients with essential hypertension. These medications lower blood pressure through different mechanisms, effectively dilating blood vessels and controlling blood pressure. The combination therapy improves hypertension that is not controlled by monotherapy.

This medication may cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, and should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Patients with allergic reactions or hypersensitivity to any of the components or related medications, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and those with severe hypotension should not take this medication. Patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment and those with unstable heart failure after acute myocardial infarction should also avoid this medication. Patients with decreased blood volume or salt may experience hypotension at the beginning of treatment, so careful monitoring is required. This medication can affect renal function; thus, patients with compromised renal function should regularly check their condition with blood tests. Patients with liver disease or impaired liver function are at risk of hepatic encephalopathy when taking this medication and should be cautious. This medication lowers blood pressure, which may lead to sudden dizziness or lightheadedness, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. Skin may become sensitive to sunlight during treatment; therefore, avoid sun exposure and contact a physician immediately if adverse reactions occur. This medication may interact with various drugs, so notify your physician or pharmacist if you are taking other medications. Elderly patients may experience more severe effects and side effects due to declining renal and liver function, so starting at a lower dose is recommended.
