Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is primarily used for the treatment of essential hypertension. It also helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in high-risk patients aged 55 and older who cannot take ACE inhibitors, such as those with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, transient ischemic attack, or evidence of end-organ damage in diabetic patients. This can reduce mortality due to myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, this medication is effectively used not only for blood pressure control but also for cardiovascular protection.
For essential hypertension, the recommended dosage is once daily 40 mg of Telmisartan taken orally with water, regardless of meals. A dose of once daily 20 mg may also be effective depending on the patient. If necessary, the dosage can be increased to 80 mg once daily, and the maximum antihypertensive effect is observed 4 to 8 weeks after increasing the dosage. For reduction of cardiovascular disease risk, it is recommended to take 80 mg once daily of this medication orally with water.
