Treatment of essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used to manage essential hypertension, providing stable control of blood pressure to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It is particularly effective for high-risk patients aged 55 years and older who cannot use ACE inhibitors. These patients may already have a history of cardiovascular diseases or evidence of end-organ damage due to diabetes. This medication significantly helps to lower the risks of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death from cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, it plays an important role not only in the management of hypertension but also in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Overall, it is used to improve cardiovascular health.
For essential hypertension, take Telmisartan 40 mg once daily by mouth with water, which can be taken regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may also be effective, and if necessary, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 80 mg once daily. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, patients with impaired liver function, those with heart valve diseases, gastroenterological patients, and those with renal artery stenosis should use this medication with particular caution. During treatment, there may be a risk of excessively low blood pressure, increased serum potassium levels, or renal function decline, so regular monitoring is necessary. When used in conjunction with other antihypertensive medications, there may be an increased risk of hypotension, hyperkalemia, and renal dysfunction, so consultation with a physician is required. Women during pregnancy or planning to become pregnant should avoid using this medication, and breastfeeding women are also advised to refrain from taking it. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children and adolescents, so it is not recommended for these groups. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, or acute renal failure may occur, and immediate medical attention is needed.
