This medication helps to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension, promoting overall health. It is also effective in reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and mortality from cardiovascular diseases in patients over 55 who are at high risk of cardiovascular disease or who cannot use ACE inhibitors. It is particularly useful for high-risk diabetes patients with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, transient ischemic attacks, or evidence of end-organ damage. By lowering cardiovascular disease risk and stabilizing blood pressure, it improves the overall cardiovascular health of patients.

How to take

Adult dose

For essential hypertension, telmisartan should be taken orally at a dose of 40 mg once daily, with or without water, and irrespective of meals. A dose of 20 mg once daily may also be effective depending on the patient, and if necessary, the dose can be increased to a maximum of 80 mg once daily. For the reduction of cardiovascular disease risk, an oral dose of 80 mg once daily with water is recommended.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm and risk of death to the fetus and newborn during pregnancy; therefore, treatment should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. It should not be administered to pregnant women, women of childbearing potential, patients with severe liver disease, or patients with certain hereditary diseases. Elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, and patients with mild to moderate liver dysfunction should use this medication with caution as there is a risk of rapidly dropping blood pressure. Blood pressure, kidney function, and serum potassium levels should be monitored regularly during treatment to ensure no abnormality. Serious side effects such as angioedema, liver dysfunction, renal failure, shock, and syncope may occur, and the physician should be consulted immediately if symptoms arise. Caution is needed when taken with other antihypertensive medications, as the blood pressure-lowering effect may be increased. The risk of hyperkalemia and worsening kidney function is particularly high when used in combination with other RAAS agents or potassium-sparing diuretics. It is advisable to discontinue this medication 24 hours before surgery, and caution should be exercised during activities such as driving or operating machinery due to the possibility of dizziness or fainting. Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established, thus it is not recommended. Overdose may result in hypotension, dizziness, and acute renal failure; immediate medical attention should be sought in such cases. Store in a place out of reach of children and avoid moisture; it is best to open the package just before taking the dose.
