Reduction of the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, and improvement of high cholesterol
This medicine helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It specifically decreases the occurrence of various heart-related problems such as myocardial infarction, stroke, need for vascular surgery, and angina. Additionally, in patients with hyperlipidemia, it lowers total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol while increasing HDL cholesterol, thus improving the lipid profile. It is also used to help lower cholesterol levels in adolescents with familial hypercholesterolemia. Overall, it is used to maintain cardiovascular health and mitigate risk factors for heart disease.
For hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg once daily. If greater reductions in LDL cholesterol are required, it may be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. The dosing range is from 10 mg to 80 mg once daily. Doses should be individualized based on treatment goals and patient response, with lipid levels analyzed within 2-4 weeks to adjust the dosage. The goal of therapy is to lower LDL cholesterol.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (ages 10-17) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg per day, with a maximum dose of 20 mg per day. Dose adjustments should be made with intervals of more than 4 weeks based on treatment goals.
