Effectiveness in reducing essential hypertension and cardiovascular disease risk
This medication is used for the treatment of essential hypertension, effectively lowering blood pressure and helping to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. In particular, patients who cannot use ACE inhibitors, especially elderly individuals at high risk for cardiovascular diseases, may take this medication to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death from cardiovascular diseases. It plays an important role in lowering the risk of major cardiovascular events related to hypertension.
For essential hypertension, administer Telmisartan 40 mg orally once daily with water, regardless of food. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may also be effective; if necessary, the dose may be increased to 80 mg once daily. For the purpose of reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, it is recommended to administer 80 mg orally once daily with water. In patients with liver disorders, do not exceed 40 mg once daily.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn, especially during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. Patients allergic to this medication or its components, pregnant or nursing women, patients with severe liver disorders or cholestasis, patients with hereditary angioedema, and those with diabetes or severe kidney impairment should not take this medication. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, liver disorders, heart valve disease, ischemic heart disease, or cerebrovascular disorders should take this medication cautiously, as rapid decreases in blood pressure may increase the risk of myocardial infarction or stroke. Patients with a risk of ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding should also be cautious while taking this medication, and special care is needed in patients with renal artery hypertension due to the risk of worsening kidney function. As this medication lowers blood pressure, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, or fainting may occur, as well as serious side effects such as hyperkalemia, kidney function abnormalities, liver dysfunction, and angioedema. If angioedema occurs, swelling of the face, lips, or throat and difficulty breathing may arise; discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare professional. This medication may interact with other antihypertensives, diuretics, potassium supplements, lithium, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), so inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medications. Pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant should avoid this medication, and nursing mothers are also advised to either avoid its use or discontinue breastfeeding. It is not recommended for children or those under 18 years of age, as its safety and efficacy have not been established. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, arrhythmias, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur, requiring immediate medical treatment. While taking this medication, it is important to adhere to the prescribed dosage and regularly monitor blood pressure and conduct blood tests to check kidney function and electrolyte status. Dizziness or fainting may occur during driving or operating machinery, so caution is advised, and it should be stored out of reach of children.
