Improvement of hypoalbuminemia

  • Hypoalbuminemia
View approved original text

This medication is used to improve hypoalbuminemia in patients with non-targeted liver cirrhosis, despite adequate dietary intake. Hypoalbuminemia is a condition where the blood albumin level is low due to decreased liver function, and this drug normalizes the albumin level in the body, improving overall health. Therefore, it helps in the recovery of liver function and improvement of nutritional status in patients.

Precautions

This drug should not be used in patients with congenital branched-chain amino acid metabolism disorders due to the risk of serious side effects such as seizures or difficulty breathing. Gastrointestinal symptoms may occur when taking this medication, including constipation, diarrhea, abdominal bloating, discomfort, and nausea. If these symptoms occur, it is necessary to reduce the dosage or temporarily discontinue the medication. It may affect kidney function, potentially leading to an increase in BUN levels on blood tests. If such changes are detected, dosage adjustment should be made. Metabolism abnormalities may also lead to increased blood ammonia levels, requiring careful monitoring. If symptoms arise, the dosage should be reduced or discontinued. Liver function may also be affected, leading to increased liver enzymes or bilirubin levels, and allergic reactions such as skin rashes or itching have been reported. This medication is primarily used in patients with low serum albumin levels and liver cirrhosis, especially when accompanied by diabetes or hepatic encephalopathy; it is crucial to maintain adequate dietary intake in these cases. Insufficient dietary intake can worsen nutritional status, so this should be accompanied by dietary guidance. In patients with severe hepatic encephalopathy or significantly impaired liver function, the efficacy of this medication may be limited, and it is advisable not to administer it. This medication contains only branched-chain amino acids and cannot provide all necessary amino acids; therefore, it is essential for patients to consume sufficient protein and calories from their meals tailored to their condition. For patients requiring protein restriction, adequate minimal levels of protein and calories must be ensured, and caution should be taken regarding nutritional deterioration during prolonged use. If blood tests show elevated BUN or ammonia levels, there may be a risk of overdose, and if hypoalbuminemia does not improve after two months of use, it may be necessary to change the treatment method. Older adults may have decreased physical function, making them more susceptible to metabolic abnormalities, so careful administration is required. The safety of this medication has not been established for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, so it should only be administered when deemed necessary. The safety of this medication in children has not been confirmed, and there is no experience in use. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container should be avoided to prevent accidents and deterioration of quality.
