Treatment of moderate to severe reflux esophagitis and gastric and duodenal ulcers
This medication is used for the treatment of duodenal ulcers, gastric ulcers, and moderate to severe gastroesophageal reflux disease.
Gastric ulcer and moderate-to-severe reflux esophagitis: Usually, adults take 1 tablet (equivalent to 20mg of S-pantoprazole) once daily in the morning before breakfast, with water, without chewing or crushing. Healing occurs within 4 weeks in most cases, but the healing period may occasionally vary from patient to patient. If healing is not complete after the initial 4 weeks of treatment, continue taking the medication for an additional 4 weeks. If there has been no response to other treatments in particular, the dose may be doubled (equivalent to 40 mg of S-pantoprazole per day). Duodenal ulcer: Usually, adults take 1 tablet (equivalent to 20 mg of S-pantoprazole) once daily in the morning before breakfast, with water, without chewing or crushing. Healing occurs within 2 weeks in most cases, but the healing period may occasionally vary from patient to patient. If healing is not complete after the initial 2 weeks of treatment, continue taking the medication for an additional 2 weeks. If there has been no response to other treatments in particular, the dose may be doubled (equivalent to 40 mg of S-pantoprazole per day). Do not exceed 20mg of S-pantoprazole per day in elderly patients or patients with renal impairment. For patients with severe liver impairment, reduce the dose and take 1 tablet (equivalent to 20mg of S-pantoprazole) once every other day.
This drug should not be used in patients with moderate to severe liver or kidney function impairment, as there is insufficient clinical experience regarding its safety and efficacy in such cases. Patients with allergies or hypersensitivity to this drug, its components, or similar drugs may experience severe allergic reactions, so caution is warranted. Particularly, when taken with certain antiviral drugs, it may reduce therapeutic efficacy due to drug interactions, thus should not be used together. Women in early pregnancy or those who may become pregnant, as well as breastfeeding women, are advised not to take this medication. This drug contains certain dyes, which necessitate caution in patients with a history of allergy to those dyes. During use, various side effects such as constipation, diarrhea, gastritis, dyspepsia, headache, dizziness, and pruritus may occur, so patients should consult a physician if symptoms worsen. Long-term use of this drug can lead to vitamin B12 absorption disorders or electrolyte imbalances such as hypomagnesemia, hence regular check-ups are necessary. There may be an increased risk of fractures, particularly in cases of prolonged high-dose use. This drug inhibits gastric acid secretion, which may slightly increase the risk of bacterial infections in the gastrointestinal tract, therefore if diarrhea persists, medical attention should be sought. Dizziness or visual disturbances may occur, requiring caution during driving or operating machinery. This medication may induce or exacerbate autoimmune diseases such as skin or systemic lupus erythematosus, thus patients should seek immediate medical advice if related symptoms arise. This medication may affect blood test results, so it is advisable to inform a physician before undergoing any tests. Gastrointestinal symptoms may be related to malignant tumors, necessitating additional tests if symptoms are severe or persistent. It is recommended that this drug not be used during pregnancy or lactation, and safety in pediatric patients has not been established. In cases of overdose, there is no specific antidote, thus appropriate treatment based on symptoms is crucial. This drug should not be chewed or crushed but taken as is, and kept out of reach of children.
