How to take

Adult dose

This medication is administered twice daily with meals. 1. If not previously treated with metformin: Starting dose is this medication 2.5/500 mg twice daily, 1 tablet at a time, with a possible increase up to 2.5/1000 mg twice daily, 1 tablet at a time. 2. Precautions

This medication helps to control blood sugar. However, one of the active ingredients, metformin hydrochloride, can cause serious side effects such as lactic acidosis, so caution is needed. Lactic acidosis is rare but can be life-threatening if treatment is delayed, so medical attention should be sought immediately if symptoms appear. Additionally, certain patients should not take this medication. For example, individuals with an allergy to this medication, type 1 diabetes, severe renal impairment, liver dysfunction, or acute alcohol intoxication should avoid it. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are also advised against using this medication. This medication carries a risk of hypoglycemia; therefore, extra caution should be taken for low blood sugar symptoms if used with insulin or sulfonylureas. Patients with impaired renal function should have regular kidney function tests, and if renal function drops below a certain standard, this medication should be discontinued. The use of this medication should be temporarily suspended during surgery or radiological examinations, and can be resumed only after kidney function returns to normal post-surgery. Rare side effects such as acute pancreatitis or bullous pemphigoid may occur while taking this medication; therefore, if abdominal pain or skin blisters occur, immediate consultation with a doctor is required. Long-term use may cause vitamin B12 deficiency, so if anemia or neurological symptoms arise, vitamin B12 levels should be checked and supplementation may be necessary. This medication may interact with other drugs, so patients should inform healthcare providers about any medications they are taking. Pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant are recommended to opt for insulin therapy instead, and breastfeeding women should also avoid using this medication. Safety has not been established in children under 10 years or adolescents aged 10 to 17, so it is not recommended for this group. Elderly patients are at higher risk of renal function decline, so periodic kidney function testing and dosage adjustments are necessary. In cases of overdose, gastrointestinal disturbances or lactic acidosis may occur, requiring immediate medical treatment which may involve hemodialysis. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and protected from moisture.
