Improvement in blood sugar control for adults with type 2 diabetes
This drug is used in conjunction with dietary management and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is administered in cases where previous diabetes treatments were not used, and blood sugar control is difficult with monotherapy; it is also used when metformin alone is insufficient. Additionally, when transitioning from the combination of linagliptin and metformin or when blood sugar control is inadequate with the combination of metformin and sulfonylurea, this drug is co-administered with sulfonylurea. If control is also difficult with the combination of insulin and metformin, this drug is used in conjunction with insulin, and it is also used when there is insufficient effect in combination with metformin and empagliflozin. This drug is effective in improving blood sugar control at various stages of therapy.
This drug is administered twice daily with meals. 1. For those not previously treated with metformin: Start with a dosage of 2.5/500 mg, 1 tablet twice daily, and can escalate to 2.5/1000 mg, 1 tablet twice daily. 2. For those having difficulty controlling blood sugar with metformin monotherapy: Administer 2.5 mg of linagliptin twice daily in addition to the existing metformin dosage. 3. For patients transitioning from combination therapy of linagliptin and metformin: Start at the current dose of linagliptin and metformin.
This drug helps manage blood sugar levels. However, during treatment, there may be a rare side effect called lactic acidosis, which can occur when lactic acid builds up excessively in the body, leading to a dangerous condition, so caution is needed. Patients with allergies to any components of this drug, as well as those with type 1 diabetes, severe renal impairment, acute heart disease, liver dysfunction, acute alcohol intoxication, or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this drug. When taken with other diabetes medications or insulin that pose a risk of hypoglycemia, attention to hypoglycemic symptoms is necessary, and dose adjustments may be required if needed. Patients with decreased renal function should undergo kidney function tests before taking this drug and regularly monitor kidney function. In situations that could affect kidney function, such as acute infections, dehydration, severe trauma, or pre- and post-surgery, this drug should be temporarily discontinued. Rare side effects such as acute pancreatitis or bullous pemphigoid with blisters on the skin can occur, so if abdominal pain or skin abnormalities appear during treatment, immediate consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. This drug may lower vitamin B12 levels, so regular monitoring of vitamin B12 levels is advisable for long-term use. When used in combination with other drugs, there may be potential interactions, so it is essential to inform healthcare professionals about any other medications being taken, especially those that could affect kidney function. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as well as those who are breastfeeding, should not use this drug, and its safety and effectiveness have not been established in children and adolescents. Elderly patients may have decreased renal function, so it is important to frequently check renal function and start treatment at the lowest dose. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal disturbances or lactic acidosis may occur, requiring immediate medical treatment, and it should be stored out of the reach of children and kept away from moisture.
