  • hypercholesterolemia
View approved original text

This medication helps to reduce elevated triglyceride levels in patients with endogenous hypertriglyceridemia. It shows efficacy when administered alone for hypertriglyceridemia (type IV), and in combined types (type IIb) of hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia, it enhances treatment effects when used together with statin drugs. It is especially used to improve blood lipid levels when triglyceride levels are not controlled, even in combination with statins. Thus, this drug is safely and effectively used for the treatment of various forms of hypertriglyceridemia.

How to take

Adult dose

Before administration, appropriate lipid-lowering dietary therapy must be conducted, and this should continue during the treatment period. To avoid gastrointestinal discomfort, it should be taken with food. For the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia, the initial dose is 2g (2 capsules) per day, which may be increased to 4g per day if necessary. It can be administered once or twice a day.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by individuals allergic to its ingredients or children under 18 years of age. Patients at high risk of bleeding due to severe trauma or surgery, patients with poor liver function, and individuals allergic to fish should use this medication cautiously. Various side effects such as dyspepsia, rash, altered taste, cold symptoms, pain, and back pain may occur during treatment; if unusual symptoms arise, consult a doctor. Various side effects, including dizziness, headache, constipation, nausea, and itching, have been reported in clinical trials and post-market studies, and while serious side effects are rare, caution is advised. Particularly, patients with cardiovascular diseases or risk factors may experience atrial fibrillation during the use of this medication, so if symptoms appear, stop taking the medication immediately and seek medical attention. Before starting treatment, triglyceride levels should be checked with blood tests, and regular blood testing should continue during treatment. Lifestyle improvements, such as weight control and limiting alcohol intake, should be made simultaneously, and caution is required when used with other lipid-lowering agents. This medication may affect blood clotting, so the risk of bleeding may increase when taken with anticoagulants or acetylsalicylic acid, thus it should be taken according to medical advice. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should use this medication cautiously, as its safety has not been fully established; use should be discussed with a doctor if necessary. In cases of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so symptomatic treatment should be administered, and it is important to keep it out of reach of children.
