Reduction of risk of myocardial infarction and stroke, improvement of hypercholesterolemia
This medication helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It particularly decreases the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, vascular surgery, and stable angina in adult patients with risk factors for coronary heart disease. It also lowers the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke in patients with type 2 diabetes who have cardiovascular risk factors. In patients with coronary heart disease, it reduces the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction, fatal and non-fatal stroke, vascular surgeries, hospitalizations for congestive heart failure, and angina. Additionally, it is used to lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apo-B protein, and triglyceride levels while raising HDL cholesterol levels in patients with hyperlipidemia. It is particularly effective in pediatric patients with familial hypercholesterolemia and is beneficial in those with cardiovascular disease risk factors. Thus, this medication is used to improve cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of various related diseases.
For the treatment of hyperlipidemia, the recommended initial dose is 10 mg of atorvastatin once daily; for patients requiring more significant LDL cholesterol reduction, it can be started at 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. Generally, doses are administered once daily in the range of 10-80 mg, individualized based on treatment goals and responses. Patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia are administered 10-80 mg once daily.
The recommended initial dose for pediatric patients (10-17 years) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia is 10 mg once daily, and the maximum recommended dose is 20 mg once daily. Dosage may be adjusted based on treatment goals, allowing for intervals of 4 weeks or more.
