Summary

Main use
Treatment of symptoms of Alzheimer's-type dementia
Who takes it
Adults · Children
Adult dose
Adults: Administer donepezil hydrochloride 5 mg once daily at bedtime. If sleep disturbances such as unusual dreams, nightmares, or insomnia occur, taking this drug in the morning may be considered. Since donepezil concentrations reach steady state 15 days after administration and the incidence of adverse reactions may be affected by the rate of dose escalation, administer the 5 mg dose for 4~6 weeks. After evaluating the clinical response during this period, the dose may be increased to 10 mg. When increasing the dose to 10 mg daily, administer with caution for gastrointestinal adverse reactions. If this drug is discontinued, its effects gradually diminish, and no rebound effect occurs following abrupt discontinuation. Female patients aged 85 years or older who are underweight: Because adverse reactions occur more frequently, careful monitoring is required. Elderly women who are underweight should not exceed 5 mg daily.
Child dose
Children: There is no experience with use in children.

Precautions

This medication is made with the ingredient donepezil hydrochloride. First, this medication should not be used by individuals who are allergic to donepezil hydrochloride or any of the components of this medication, pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, and women who are breastfeeding. Individuals with cardiac diseases should use this medication with caution. Particularly, bradycardia or arrhythmias may occur, so the cardiac condition should be closely monitored. Those with gastrointestinal diseases or who are currently taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should be cautious as there may be an increased risk of exacerbating gastric ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding. Individuals with a history of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease should carefully use this medication as bronchoconstriction or increased mucus production may worsen symptoms. Patients with extrapyramidal disorders such as Parkinson's disease should be cautious when using this medication as symptoms may worsen. This medication contains the dye Yellow No. 5, so individuals allergic to this component should use it cautiously. Taking this medication may result in cardiac-related abnormal symptoms (e.g., fainting, bradycardia, heart block), gastrointestinal bleeding, liver dysfunction, cerebrovascular issues, movement disorders, severe muscle abnormalities, respiratory distress, acute pancreatitis, acute renal failure, etc., so if these symptoms occur, consult a doctor immediately. Additionally, various side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, insomnia, hallucinations, aggressive behavior, and depression may occur, so careful observation is necessary. This medication is used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and should only be administered while it is effective, with regular evaluations of its efficacy. Be cautious when driving or operating machinery, especially at the beginning of treatment or during dose increases, as dizziness or fatigue may occur. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid using this medication unless absolutely necessary, and should discontinue breastfeeding if it is required. The safety of this medication in children has not been established, so it is not used in pediatric patients. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is important to inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking heart medications, antibiotics, antidepressants, antipsychotics, or anti-inflammatory analgesics. In case of overdose, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sweating, bradycardia, hypotension, respiratory depression, and seizures may occur, and immediate treatment at a hospital is required.
