Treatment for essential hypertension and reduction of cardiovascular risk
This medication is used to treat essential hypertension. It also helps reduce the risk of death from myocardial infarction, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases. It is particularly suitable for patients over 55 who are at high risk, such as those with coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, or diabetes, and who cannot use ACE inhibitors. This medication effectively reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and improves health.
For essential hypertension, telmisartan should be taken orally once daily at a dose of 40 mg with water, and it can be taken regardless of meals. Depending on the patient, 20 mg once daily may also be effective. If necessary, the dose can be increased to 80 mg once daily, and the maximum blood pressure lowering effect is observed 4 to 8 weeks after dose escalation. For reduction of cardiovascular disease risk, it is recommended to take 80 mg orally once daily with water.
This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn if used during pregnancy, so it should be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. It should not be used by women who are allergic to this drug or its components, those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, patients with severe liver dysfunction, those with a history of certain angioedema, or patients with diabetes or severe renal impairment. Caution is needed for the elderly, patients with hyperkalemia, patients with mild liver dysfunction, and those with heart valve disease or cerebrovascular disease when using this medication. Various adverse reactions, such as infections, hypotension, hyperkalemia, renal impairment, liver dysfunction, and allergic reactions, may occur during the use of this medication, so symptoms should be closely monitored. Particular symptoms such as angioedema, severe hyperkalemia, acute renal failure, shock, interstitial pneumonia, and rhabdomyolysis may occur, and if these abnormal symptoms appear, medication should be stopped immediately and medical consultation is advised. Patients with kidney disease or those undergoing dialysis should regularly undergo blood tests to check kidney function and electrolyte levels, as hypotension symptoms may arise in a state of low blood volume or sodium deficiency. Caution should be taken when using this medication with other antihypertensives as it may enhance the blood pressure-lowering effect, so consultation with healthcare providers is advised. When used in combination with certain drugs, renal function deterioration or electrolyte abnormalities may occur, which requires attention. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should absolutely avoid using this medication, and breastfeeding women should also avoid taking this medication or discontinue breastfeeding. This medication is not recommended for children under 18 years of age as its safety and efficacy have not been established. Elderly patients should be closely monitored and take it cautiously as excessive hypotension may increase the risk of stroke and other issues. In case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur, so immediate treatment at a medical institution is required, as this medication is not removed by dialysis, requiring caution. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children, and it is advisable not to open the package until just before use. Caution should be exercised while driving or operating machinery as fainting or dizziness may occur, and patients with hereditary fructose intolerance should not take this medication.
